Depuis le début des années 2000, les jardins partagés se sont considérablement développés dans la région francilienne avec l’appui des municipalités. Espaces de proximité gérés par une association, ils visent à favoriser le développement d’une présence végétale urbaine, la création de liens sociaux et une démarche participative des habitants. Le but de cet article, qui s’intéresse spécifiquement aux jardins partagés installés sur des friches urbaines, est d’interroger différentes acceptions de la notion de participation afin d’évaluer le rôle effectif des membres des jardins partagés. Une participation des usagers, qui en définitive, se limite souvent à la gestion et à l’animation du site.

Au début des années 2000, on assiste en France au développement de vacants jardinés : des espaces interstitiels, dont les anciennes utilisations du sol sont caduques, temporairement conquis et végétalisés par les habitants. L’institutionnalisation de ces initiatives par les municipalités donne naissance au jardin partagé, dont le vacant jardiné constitue un type spécifique installé sur un terrain vacant et temporaire. Cette thèse vise à appréhender le vacant jardiné comme un outil d’analyse privilégié du « faire » et du « vivre » la ville contemporaine grâce à une étude, combinant méthodologies qualitatives et quantitatives, fondée sur 48 sites du nord-est de l’Île-de-France. Nous montrons ainsi que l’encadrement de jardins associatifs par les municipalités est un fait inédit. Toutefois, bien que ces territoires soient coproduits et que les usagers participent pleinement à la gestion du vacant jardiné, ils ont un rôle limité dans la prise de décision. Si le développement des vacants jardinés institutionnalisés témoigne d’un engagement politique, il s’inscrit aussi dans des stratégies de rentabilisation accrue des espaces urbains qui présentent des bénéfices certains pour les municipalités en termes d’embellissement, de sécurisation et d’image politique. Enfin, les impacts sociaux et environnementaux sont à relativiser. D’une part, la création de liens sociaux est circonscrite à l’espace du jardin, en raison de son statut hybride relevant du « club ». D’autre part, les vacants jardinés sont davantage envisagés comme des outils d’amélioration du cadre de vie et de sensibilisation à l’environnement que comme des territoires écologiques et de biodiversité effectifs.

Since the late 1990’s, the jardin partagé (literally shared garden) have emerged in France. It is described as the new trendy green space manifesting the promotion of environmentally friendly behaviors, a desire of leisure, social bonding and citizen commitment. Managed by inhabitants, the jardins partagés have been multiplied in Île-de-France, supported by City councils. As a response to global and local issues related to environment, societies and food production, the jardins partagés are territorial markers of social and political processes of « producing » and « living » the contemporary city. This paper aims to question the jardins partagés as environmental transition territories because they would participate in the improvement of the environment and its ecological components. Based on 48 case-studies located in the Parisian metropolitan area, the analysis of discourses and practices of users and politicians highlight the role of jardins partagés as living environment enhancement and awareness to environmentally friendly practices that promote urban biodiversity.

This contribution, which focuses on nomadic community gardens in Paris, aims to lay out the contemporary urban landscape at a crossroads between temporary uses and the sustainable city.
Nomadic gardens are “on the move” collective gardening projects managed by inhabitants as the sites await urban redevelopment. The Parisian nomadic gardens emphasize new political and social discourses and practices relating to the temporary uses and moving of urban spaces. The translocation of gardens aims to foster the acceptance, and, paradoxically, the permanence, of temporary uses. Then, it could promote the emergence of a green “intermittent” city. However, this process is not always a smooth one and it questions the association of two frames of reference: the sustainable city and the neoliberal city. This exploratory work stresses the difficulty of going beyond binary approaches (anchor/circulation; continuity/discontinuity; temporary/sustainable; sustainable city/neoliberal city) in order to grasp the realities of the contemporaneous urban fabric, pointing to the need to set up a hybrid analytical framework.
